The heat stills everything
into smallness. Everyone is home
or perhaps no one. Even the cicadas 
are too tired to speak. The golden dog 
pulls me down the smallest 
paths towards sleeping goats, 
past the brown-and-white heifer
who blows, long and cool, and the dog 
trembles with giddiness. 
One drunk man stops, twice, to…
