Why subscribe?

Every Thursday I send a free lyric essay or poem, accompanied by original art. It takes an average of four hours a week for me to produce these offerings, and the time is bought by paid subscribers who keep it free for everyone else. Every post is bent around wonder and questions. Scientists say the questions we ask can change the world but we all already knew that.

What’s a lyric essay?

It’s a genre of writing that escapes easy defining, which is why I love it. A hybrid between deep research and wild flights of fancy, loads of sensory language, a poem in prose that tells you true facts you never knew, a way to capture memoir while honouring what you don’t yet know. It’s all of those things.

When I write a lyric essay I want the reader to feel like the air is dislodged around them. Like something has shifted - hopefully towards beauty and wholeness.

Who makes the art?

I do! My words often get drawn back to the howl of being human in this world, but art is always celebratory for me. I love the exploration process of it, the TEXTURE, the fact that metallic colours are an option (hello, gold!) and the way it builds community.

If you want to take some of the joy home, I have pieces for sale here! And art cards. I’m working on unique art zines that will be mailed to paid subscribers — and won’t be available anywhere else.

Will this Substack stay free?

Yes! It takes four hours a week, give or take, to write and revise each post. That’s not counting the time that goes into creating a unique piece of art for each one. I’m deeply grateful for paid subscribers who allow me to put out content without a paywall. My dream is to get enough paid subscribers to buy me time do more in-depth research.

Every Thursday, an offering: a lyric essay, a poem or a deep dive into an art piece. Each one a question that hovers like bees around the hive of place and rupture. We'll do our best to follow the questions home.
