Stunning ♥️ (And I came here to say this must have been inspired by your reading — why am I no longer surprised at being wrong?? Haha)
My favorite tree fact is that the crowns of the Redwoods are their own biome, in a sense, and have an ecosystem and species unknown anywhere else. They’re so cool!
Ahh that is so cool! I've been learning about the layers of the forest and that's wild to think of the upperstory/crown being its own biome. I'm going to look into that more :)
That was beautifully written, Maaike. Thank you. I love trees, with their deep roots and ability to harness light, standing as silent witnesses to the ever-changing world around them. My favourite tree fact was the jaw-dropping moment twenty years ago when I first discovered the existence of the underground mycelium network. Over the years, as I’ve read more and more about this system, I’ve realised how deeply connected all things are. Woodlands are my favourite places!
Deborah, I love that fact and how you write it - "to harness light" <3 It's incredible how well forests work together - and that there's more going on below ground than above! Wohlleben said: "We know less about life in the soil than we know about the ocean floor, and less about the ocean floor than we know about the surface of the moon. Up to half of the forest’s biomass is underground."
I am obsessed with the artwork in this piece! Stunning 😍
Walnut ink is the BEST medium!
